The composition and equation of state of dense fluids and plasmas is calculated within the chemical picture. While dissociation is important for molecular fluids such as hydrogen, the excitation of higher ionization stages is relevant for e. g. noble gases and metal plasmas. Results for the Hugoniot curves of hydrogen‐helium mixtures which are relevant for astrophysical applications are shown. The composition of beryllium plasma at solid statelike densities and at temperatures of several eV is determined and compared with new experimental results. (© 2003 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
