The current‐voltage characteristics I(U) of the PSI‐1 facility, a DC‐low pressure‐arc with superimposed magnetic field, have been measured in a wide range of parameters and for various working gases. An analytical model based on the energy and particle balance in a 1‐D approximation has been developed. The results are compared with the experimental characteristics in argon and helium discharges and show a good agreement. A limiting value for electron temperature depending on the ionization potential, the neutral gas density and the ion mass is predicted by the model which is confirmed by the experiments.
