Abstract The influence of a transverse magnetic field on a contracted argon discharge column ( p = 23 torrs; I discharge = 100…200 ma) is investigated. The experiments show oscillatory behaviour of the column similar to rope waves, which becomes irregular with higher B‐field intensities. The results of spectral and correlation measurements are discussed in relation to the corresponding non‐linear wave equation qualitatively.
