Abstract Coherent PSK data transmission systems are modelled using matrices and non‐linear co‐ordinate transformations. A polyphase multiplier type demodulator with a new structure is suggested. A mean square error (MSE) analysis is carried out in the frequency domain for small perturbations which are linear distortions and static imperfections of the carrier and timing recovery, without any other restrictions for the bandwidth and the distortions. General and explicit expressions are given for the optimal carrier phase and timing delay, for their sensitivity and for the minimal MSE value. Using these expressions, filter design as well as carrier and timing recovery considerations are presented.
