This paper presents a novel generic translinear differential output stage that is useful for the implementation of rational functions with a squared denominator. As a proof of concept, such output stage is used to implement the first derivative of a rational activation function. Simulated results are presented for an implementation on a 0.35 µm CMOS process showing an almost perfect fit with the theoretical expressions. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
