SUMMARY Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been efficiently applied for chemical and biosensing. In this paper, we present a new numerical simulation for the Kretschman type SPR sensors. In order to apply a circuit approach, we decomposed the problem by (1) using GAMESS to determine the dielectric function of the molecular layer, (2) using Computer Simulation Technology Microwave Studio to calculate the electromagnetic field. An interactive computer‐aided design technique is presented for Kretschmann‐type biosensors. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
