The Cover Feature shows how authentic model compounds for biphenyl ether units in lignin cleave, but differently than commonly used simple models, under Pd/C hydrogenolysis conditions. More importantly, they and real lignins produce a novel and mechanistically revealing rearrangement monomer (highlighted), diagnostic for biphenyl ether structures in lignin.
