A simple and efficient catalytic oxidative system for the synthesis of benzimidazole derivatives with H 2 O 2 in the presence of catalytic amounts of Bu 4 NI is developed. The formation of highly reactive iodine (III) intermediate [Bu 4 N] + [IO 2 ] − is detected by ESI–MS for the first time, and a possible mechanism for the oxidation is proposed.
