Biomass conversion over a n ickel phosphide catalyst is explored for the first time. Through both acid and metallic sites on the Ni 2 P catalyst surface, cellulose is selectively transformed into sorbitol in yields as high as 48.4 % and at sorbitol/mannitol ratios as high as 10:1. The results are superior to results achieved by using precious‐metal catalysts, which can be attributed to the efficient “cooperation” between the two types of active sites.
