Abstract The level of exchange in dialogue can vary from polite discussion of a topic to deep engagement with a defined “other” characterized by exquisite listening, honest speaking, and empathic connection. This article describes processes for self‐reflection that can help dialogue participants resist social and cultural pressures to polarize, step back from damaging communication patterns, develop greater insight, and expand their capacity for constructive communication.
