Metastable zone width measurements in aqueous solutions of 18 well soluble substances have been used for the characterization of the nucleation process in absence and in presence of crystals. As could be expected, it has been confirmed that the specific surface energy of the critical nucleus is only slightly decreased by the presence of crystals. The effect is almost negligible for the critical nucleus size. Both of these quantities can be correlated with the solubility of the substance.
