Abstract Theoretical relations for photoreflectance and electroreflectance spectra of semiconductors are derived without any restrictions regarding the modulation field. For very low modulation fields it is found that the responses of both types of spectra are directly proportional to each other with the electroreflectance signal just twice as large as the photoreflectance signal. At moderate and high modulation fields the spectra are no longer proportional to each other.
