Large single crystals of optical quality of triclinic K 2 Cr 2 O 7 have been grown from aqueous solutions. Their morphological and growth properties are not compatible with point symmetry 1 . Complete sets of the elastic constants and their temperature derivatives were determined from ultrasonic resonances of plane‐parallel plates. The elastic behaviour and also the thermal expansion are highly anisotropic. Owing to very strong photoelastic effects these crystals are suited for certain acousto‐optic deflection devices.
