Abstract A detailed surface microtopographic study has been carried out on the (0001) faces of melt‐grown CdBr 2 single crystals. Mainly the growth of the crystals takes place by continuous solidification at the solid‐liquid interface. Rarely, the growth occurs by two‐dimensional nucleation and still more rarely by spiral mechanism. Most spirals are seen to be polygonized such that the polygonization extends right upto the centres of the spirals.
