The main part of this paper represents a comparison of the investigations of the gibbsite short‐time heat treatment with other calcination methods. The transition forms of alumina, preferentially nearly amorphous Al 2 O 3 and χ‐Al 2 O 3 , resp., produced by mechanical activation and short‐time heat treatment procedure show a very high reactivity and a large specific area. The samples can be transmitted into different aluminium hydroxides, particularly into boehmite‐rich products with a very low alkali content by hydration of alumina solids. These solids can be used preferentially for the preparation of adsorbents and catalyst components.
