A new approach to the analysis of an adiabatic thermal stress is an ideally brittle solid under external mechanical stress is presented, when fracture occurs well before plastic yielding. An expression for the magnitude of the temperature drop Δ T f to start fracture in crystals of cubic shape have been deduced and analysed in terms of free energy, entropy, modulus of elasticity, and a new parameter termed as ‘resistance to brittle failure (α)’. It is found that the order of thermal shock resistance of brittle material depends largely on α and varies depending upon the particular characteristic of material.
