Characteristic interface phenomena have been studied in zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) using high‐resolution electron microscopy. Glassy phases in grain triple junctions, microstructure of interfaces between martensitic twins, regularly spaced misfit dislocations at the interface between intragranular t‐ZrO 2 and the Al 2 O 3 matrix and amorphization processes in the twin‐terminating region (which can initiate grain‐boundary microcracking) were observed by lattice plane imaging techniques.
