Single crystals of Al 2 O 3 :Ti 3+ (Ti ranging from 0.1–1.5 at.%) are grown by the Bridgman‐Stockbarger method from a mixture of Al 2 O 3 and Ti 2 O 3 in a medium of 90% Ar and 10% H 2 . The radial distribution of Ti 3+ in the crystals is determined by measuring the optical transmission. The absorption spectra of the crystals and the luminescence spectra of Ti 3+ in the Al 2 O 3 matrix are obtained and the crystals fluorescence lifetime is determined. The optical characteristics of the crystals have shown good agreement with the corresponding characteristics of Al 2 O 3 :Ti 3+ crystals grown by other methods.
