We propose a new calculation following traditional methods for deducing refractive index from the fringe pattern of the transmission spectrum of a thin transparent CdS, ZnS, and Zn x Cd 1− x S film surrounded by nonabsorbing media. The error in the refractive index measurements is 4–5%. We have found that polycrystalline CdS, ZnS, and Zn x Cd 1− x S evaporated films have refractive index different from those of single crystal material.
