The theoretical sensitivity of the flotation method of density determination has been estimated. The natural pressure gradient is found to be a limiting factor and the maximum sensitivity is 3 × 10 −9 . In practice, the accuracy of the flotation measurements is controlled by the sample error. The main sources of sample errors have been analysed.
