Chemical analyses, IR‐spectra, differential‐thermal analyses and X‐ray diffraction studies of water‐containing alunite were carried out. These results were compared with those obtained for alunite. Group‐theoretical analyses of the vibrational spectra of alunite were performed. It is shown that water‐containing alunite has a structure similar to that of alunite, but inclusion of water molecules causes a lowering in symmetry and explains differences in the mineralogical characterizations of both alunites.
