Abstract Some interesting oberservations on the DC electroluminescence of (ZnS, ZnO):Cu, Cl electroluminors are reported. A burst of emission is observed at the time of switching on (also at switching off) the field which very slowly decays to a saturation value. The time for saturated emission decreases with increasing temperature. The emission colours of bursts and the saturated light are different. The intensities of the bursts are dependent upon the polarity of the electrodes and the temperature. Possible explanations to these effects are proposed.
