The aim of this chapter is to reminde some fundamental concepts in Crystal Growth developed in the last century. These concern the definition of the state of non‐equilibrium, the equilibrium and growth shapes of crystals, the atomistic point of view on surface energy, the crystallochemical description of the surface in terms of bond chains and the first mechanisms unravelling the way crystals grow. We hope it can help to place in the proper scientific context the peculiar subjects of this book.
