A model consisting of 3 transparent sheets, moveable one relative to the other, is used to obtain pictorial representations of any of the 36 positions which one dioctahedral (mesooctahedral) kaolinite layer may occupy relative to its predecessor. In a similar manner such a model may be used to represent the corresponding 10 possible positions of any trioctahedral (homo‐octahedral) kaolinite layer relative to its predecessor. The model is based on the discussion of these possibilities in terms of OD theory which is given in outline.
