Crack propagation in Na 2 OCaOSiO 2 glass foils with thicknesses between 0.4 μm and 4 μm was studied by HVEM in‐situ straining experiments. The propagation of cracks could be achieved by a stepwise loading of the glass foils in a quantitative HVEM tensile tilting stage. The contrasts observed in front of the crack tips indicate a plastic deformation of the glass foils. The influence of the imaging electrons on the mechanical properties of the foil material is discussed.
