Distribution of Nd 3+ ions in garnet single crystals grown from a melt by Stockbarger technique is presented. Possible factors which can influence the segregation coefficient are discussed. Among those three principal mechanisms are considered: (a) capture of impurity ions by a foreign phase, (b) evaporation and (c) surface processes at the interface.
