NaNO 3 single crystals are prepared from melt by the method of lowering crucible using epitaxial growth of NaNO 3 on mica. The suitable heat treatment preventing the cracking of single crystals is found, and the distribution of dislocations in annealed crystals has been studied. It is shown that the growth conditions have great influence on the perfection of crystals. The quality of crystals grown from melt can be improved so that it equals the quality of crystals grown from solution by preventing the melt from thermal decomposition of NaNO 3 into NaNO 2 by growing the crystals under oxygen pressure.
