While fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a well‐established diagnosis, children and adolescents who do not have the syndrome but have been affected by prenatal exposure to alcohol may have brain damage resulting in impairments of neurocognition, self‐regulation, and adaptive functioning, according to experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). In a special article, guidelines for the identification, diagnosis, and referral of these children are described, with emphasis on behaviors that can be identified in pediatric medical homes.
