Abstinence does not have to be a requirement for alcoholism medications, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in proposed guidance that was released in February. Pharmaceutical companies can choose abstinence as an end point, but under the new guidance they can also choose elimination of heavy drinking, which is four drinks in one day for a woman and five drinks in one day for a man.
