The mechanism for irritability in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is not well understood, despite how common this is. It is known that irritability in typically developing children does lead to long‐term adverse outcomes, so it's surprising that it has been so little studied in children with ASD. To respond to this gap, researchers looked at the relationship between irritability and stress responses in boys with high‐functioning ASD (hfASD).
