Inflammatory processes are linked to depression in adults, with increased levels of interleukin (IL)‐6, tumor necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α), and C‐reactive protein (CRP) found in two meta‐analyses. There are fewer studies in children and adolescents, but evidence supports a connection between the inflammatory markers and depression, as well as suicidal ideation and behavior, in these ages.
