Dr. Meier: I am glad that I got a rise out of Canon Hamilton with my criticism of Calabresi's proposal. I do want to say that I am not at all opposed to making good to patients who have been damaged in a trial for their suffering. What I do say (and I will argue with hirn later) is that the occasions on which that opportunity is before us are, I believe, very few. I don't think it provides a very powerful or widely applicable tool to meet our obligations.
