There are many reasons why I wish Jerry Cornfield were here—not the least of which is that he would then have had to follow a preacher to the podium. Actually, Canon Hamilton, I think, has added more than anybody I can think of to the whole problem of the ethics of c1inical trials, and I have had the pleasure of serving with him on policy advisory boards for a number of years. I rnight be able to take Jerry Cornfield's place on the program, but I could never fill his shoes, at least not in this generation. I hope you recognize that both speakers are biostatisticians and none of the three discussants are.
