There has been considerable recent concern about the design of safe and effective dosage regimens of aspirin for the treatment of pain, fever, and inflammatory disease. In 1972 the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration appointed a special Advisory Panel on Internal Analgesic and Antirheumatic Products to prepare a report on the safety, effectiveness, and labeling (including dosage recommendations) of nonprescription internal analgesic and antirheumatic drugs. The extensive report of that Panel was submitted to the Commissioner on April 5, 1977, and was published in the Federal Register in July. 3 A substantial portion of the report is concerned with the problem of safe and effective dosage regimens of aspirin for adults and children.
