In this paper, I propose to review some of the current concepts of development of immunocompetence, to describe the cellular events that follow exposure to antigen, and to show how these data may be applied to therapy with immunosuppressive drugs. The greatest emphasis will be placed on the glucocorticoids, because these agents are widely employed in treatment of inflammatory and immunologic diseases, and there are several important, recent observations on their mechanisms of action.
