Contact dermatitis is a common skin condition seen by dermatologists. Allergic contact dermatitis (CD) makes up 20% of the group. It is characterized by a delayed onset, perivascular mononuclear cell infiltrate, and passive transfer by lymphoid cells rather than serum, and thus is generally accepted as a variety of delayed hypersensitivity or cellular immune reaction. This brief review will consider allergic contact dermatitis from three aspects: (1) the afferent limb; (2) the central lymphoid compartment; and (3) the efferent limb.
