In a clinical study of pyrvinium pamoate in the treatment of 93 patients infested with Enterobius vermicularis (pinworms), the cure rate for the suspension form of the drug was significantly higher than that for the existing tablet form. In further studies with 209 infested patients, a new tablet form in which the pyrvinium particles were less than 10 p. in diameter (in contrast to the 50 to 90 p. size in the previous tablet), the cure rates with both tablet and suspension were not significantly different. The only side effect was vomiting, which occurred in some patients who received the suspension. The results indicate that the micronized tablets are therapeutically equivalent to the suspension. Spectrophotofluorometric assay for drug in blood and urine demonstrated no pyrvinium pamoate.
