In four separate studies, attempts were made to examine the relationships between the plasma levels of trieyclie antidepressants and clinieal outeome. In eaeh of the four studies a different relationship was found. Two maior underlying methodologie problems that have eontributed to these apparent diserepaneies are examined. These problems are the heterogeneity of the depressive population and individual variability in plasma protein binding.
