Metabolie studies that are helptul tor the extrapolation of animal data trom one species to another, and from animals to man, include the investigation of speeies differenees in rates and pathways of drug metabolism and the determination of whether or not plasma eoneentrations of a drug and/or its metabolites are eorrelated with the drug's pharmaeologie aetion or toxieity. Individual differenees in the metabolism of a new drug in man should also be eonsidered, and the dose of the drug should be adjusted to the metabolie eapaeity of the individual. Metabolie studies early in the investigation of an experimental anti‐inflammatory eompound are presented as an example of how metabolie studies may be helpful during the development of a new drtlg.
