The biologic hazards of contemporary therapeutic practices must be comprehensively and rigorously evaluated at all stages of mammalian maturation. Our ability to reliably predict the effects of pharmacologically active molecules and to better understand the processes regulating drug disposition in developing organisms must be significantly enhanced. Initiation of a multifaceted program, at both the basic and applied levels, is essential if we are to advance pharmacologic therapy and avoid further iatrogenic catastraphes in this special population.
