Eight patients were given practolol in a double‐blind, randomized study comparing doses of 200, 400, and 800 mg per day against placebo. Double‐blind periods were preceded by a 12 week single‐blind run‐in period. Data obtained from 21 double‐blind periods showed a significant reduction in heart rate at all dose levels and a reduction in blood pressure at the maximal dosage. Improved treadmill exercise tolerance after practolol administration was demonstrated, in association with suppression of exercise‐induced tachycardia. Improvement in exercise performance was observed with practolol doses of 200 mg per day. Clinical improvement could be detected at the 800 mg per day dosage in individual patients.
