The volunteer subject, as a formal concept in drug research, is a relatively new phenomenon. It is also a uniquely human phenomenon. It was probably Hobart Reimann who once wrote that the adjective, human, before the noun, volunteer, was redundant, sinee Homa sapiens is the only species that could volunteer for anything. While some people who work with animals might dispute that statement, there is enough right about it to make its point.
