The nature and incidence of the unwanted effects of an injection of pentagastrin 6 μg per kilogram subcutaneously in 15 students were compared with those of a control injection in 9 students. The incidence of subjective effects with pentagastrin in this study was higher than that reported in most other studies. Almost all of the volunteers given pentagastrin had mild transient subjective effects. These effects and their time course were then examined in detail in a double‐blind crossover study in 10 more students. Evidence is provided that the nausea experienced during a pentagastrin acid‐secretion test is caused by the drug rather than by the presence of a stomach tube.
