A double blind cross‐over trial of the responses of asthmatic patients to 2 microaerosol bronchodilators, isoproterenol and metaproterenol, was conducted. Drug effects were followed for 6 hours, with the use of 3 indices of pulmonary function. Effects on blood pressure, pulse rate, and subjective sensations were monitored. The results indicated significantly greater duration of action following administration of metaproterenol. Although this drug was given in higher dosage by weight, fewer side effects appeared than after inhalation of metaproterenol. The mean improvement in lung function was not significantly different, but the peak effect of metaproterenol inhalation occurred somewhat later than that of the isoproterenol.
