Six healthy adult subjects and 8 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were given acetylsalicylic acid, 1.0 Gm. 3 times a day, in the form of tablets dissolved in water. Vascular, plasma, and platelet factors were studied before and during the second week of acetylsalicylic acid ingestion. There was no difference in response between normal subjects and rheumatoid arthritis patients; acetylsalicylic acid in the doses employed in this study induced prolongation of bleeding time, prothrombin time, and increased platelet stickiness. These defects were “ … definitely not sufficient to cause major hemorrhage, and, if this occurs, individual susceptibility to acetylsalicylic acid must be assumed.”
