The proteolytic enzyme, chymotrypsin, was administered orally to 27 patients, each of whom had previously been subiected to the same experimental procedure without chymotrypsin. A statistically significant increase in plasma chymotrypsin levels was found 4 hours after administration. This experiment was designed primarily to determine whether chymotrypsin was absorbed from the intestinal tract of man. Quantitative data necessary to speculate on the clinical significance of these findings are not available.
