Strychnine should not be forgotten or overlooked as a cause of poisoning. It is the principal alkaloid of a seed called nux vomica . It was first employed in medicine in 1540. The adult lethal dose is 60 to 90 mg., but now with adequate therapy recovery may take place following ingestion of doses exceeding 500 mg. It is still found in medications and pesticides.
