Subjects wishing to lose weight were matched into groups on the basis of degrees of excess weight. One of four treatments‐phenmetrazine d‐amphetamine, placebo, and benzphetamine ‐were then assigned at random to each of the matched groups. The first 4 weeks were the control periods for all subjects. From the fifth through the twelfth weeks, all subjects took one tablet of one of the code‐labeled medications 3 times daily. Careful serial observations were made on weight change, caloric intake, therapeutic and side effects. No dietary re5trictions were imposed. Results were analyzed statistically before the code was broken. Treatment with each of the three amphetamines induced about the same weight losses for each, but these were Significantly different from that after placebo. The reduction in caloric intake was not significant. Side effects were noted in all four treatment groups.
