The evaluation of drugs in gastroenterology often has been characterized by the philosophy of post hoc, ergo propter hoc and by a lack of sophistication about the essentials of an objective, controlled drug testing program. Several pertinent problems in the appraisal of gastroenterologic drugs will be considered in this article.
