Studies of threshold laxative response were conducted on 15 males and 10 females between 20 and 45 years of age, by a double blind method over aperiod of a year. The threshold laxative dose of white phenolphthalein averaged 68 mg. for the males and 36 mg. for the females; for yellow phenolphthalein, 47 mg. and 32 mg., respectively. This study suggests that the factor of sex should be considered in establishing a threshold dose for this product.
